like a cacti

listening to music when something about the lyrics struck me.

[And the rattlesnake said,
“I wish I had hands so
I could hug you like a man.”
And then the cactus said,
“Don’t you understand,
My skin is covered with sharp spikes
That’ll stab you like a thousand knives.
A hug would be nice,
But hug my flower with your eyes.”]

Some are like cactus, they want to contribute in their own little away while keeping themselves safe. Being there but at a safe distance. Their care for people shows in a way like the cacti’s flower, and its meant to, most of the time, be appreciated from a distance. True, a hug would be nice. But the spikes are there for a reason, to keep themselves safe, they deny that yearning for closeness just so they will be safe from harm.

In my opinion, nobody can understand the cactus people unless they are one themselves. They understand that fear, and they know the voids that need to be filled but is never visible to most.

So, how can two cactus embrace each other? They’ll either evolve their spikes into softer bristles or collide until the spikes shed and the cactus are now defenseless and can embrace each other.
